Remembering Eric Dolphy (June 20, 1928 – June 29, 1964)

Remembering Eric Dolphy today with a clip of the Mingus-composed blues, “So Long Eric.” The complete solo is only about 36 seconds long — who else could say so much in so little time?

Recorded at RTB Studio, Liege, Belgium on April 19, 1964, just hours after the band’s famed midnight concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The title of this composition originally referred to Dolphy’s announcement that he would resign from the band and reside permanently in Europe at the tour’s conclusion, but later took on a more tragic meaning when Dolphy passed away at the age of 36 on June 29, 1964, only a few months after the completion of the tour.
