Boris Kozlov is a two-time Grammy award-winning musician. He serves as bassist, arranger, and co-musical director for Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra. With an impeccable time feel and deep dig, he's been first-call for important jazz acts such as Michael Brecker, Lew Tabackin, Jean-Michel Pilc, among others. He also leads his own creative projects, and is a driving force in some of the most exciting rhythm sections in modern jazz.
Andrew McKee is a storied bassist and compassionate educator steeped in the Mingus tradition. He has a unique style and hard-swinging approach that evolved naturally from his formative years on Philadelphia’s jazz scene working with Hank Mobley, Johnny Hartman, Slide Hampton, and Philly Joe Jones. After arriving in New York City he's played with Elvin Jones, Chet Baker, Michel Petrucciani, Mingus Big Band and Mingus Dynasty. He is a published author, and professor at The New School's School of Jazz & Contemporary Music where he teaches Mingus Music.
Michael Richmond is a prolific veteran bassist and generous spirit. He first began working with Sue Mingus and Mingus Dynasty in 1979. Throughout his career Michael has been featured on over 350 recordings and has performed with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Ravi Shankar, Elvin Jones, Gil Evans, Mingus bands, and many others. He has won Grammy awards with Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has traveled the world performing and teaching.

“Eric Dolphy was a complete musician. He could fit anywhere. He was a fine lead alto in a big band. He could make it in a classical group. And, of course, he was entirely his own man when he soloed... He had mastered jazz. And he had mastered all the instruments he played. In fact, he knew more than what’s supposed to be possible to do on them.” - Charles Mingus

"This mule ain’t from Moscow
This mule ain’t from the South
But this mule has some learnin'
Mostly mouth-to-mouth
This mule could be called stubborn and lazy
But in a clever sorta’ way this mule could be workin’
Waitin’ and learnin’ and plannin’
For a sacred kind of day
A day when burnin’ sticks and crosses is not mere child’s play
But a madman in his most incandescent bloom
Whose lover’s soul is imperfection and is most lustrous groom
So, stand fast there young old mule
Soothe in contemplation
That burning whole and aching thigh
Your stubbornness is ever living
And cool anxiety is about to die
Freedom for your daddy
Freedom for your momma
Freedom for your brothers and sisters
But no freedom for me
Freedom for your daddy’s daddy
Freedom for your momma’s momma
Freedom for your brothers and sisters
But no freedom for me
Freedom for your daddy’s daddy
Freedom for your momma’s momma
Freedom for your brothers and sisters
But no freedom for me" - Freedom by Charles Mingus

Don't Let It Happen Here!
*
"One day they came and they took the communist people, and I said nothing because I was not a communist.
Then one day they came and they took the people of the Jewish faith, and I said nothing because I was not a Jew.
Then one day they came and took the unionists, and I said nothing because I was not a unionist.
They burned the Catholic churches one day, and I said nothing because I was a Protestant.
Then one day they came and they took me, and I could say nothing because I was guilty as they were, for not speaking out and saying that all people have a right to freedom.
Yes, I was as guiltily of genocide as those who killed the 18 million people along with me, and I say the only way we can avoid this is to look and speak out now... and don't let it happen here." - Charles Mingus
In 1965 Charles Mingus embraced the political warning of Martin Niemöller, the German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor who spoke out against the Nazi regime, and proclaimed everyone's right to freedom. "Don't Let It Happen Here" was inspired by Niemöller's poem "First they came..." Charles re-wrote Niemöller's message into a sneering Mingus narrative.

"I wrote it for my tombstone..." - Charles Mingus on "Epitaph"
A two hour composition by Charles Mingus for 30 musicians - Conducted by Gunther Schuller
World Premiere: Saturday, June 3, 1989
Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center “Epitaph" is 4,235 measures long, takes more than two hours to perform, and was only completely discovered during the cataloguing process after his death. With the help of a grant from the Ford Foundation, the score and instrumental parts were copied, and the work itself was premiered by a 30-piece orchestra, conducted by Gunther Schuller and produced by Mingus's widow, Sue, at Alice Tully Hall on June 3, 1989, 10 years after his death, and issued as a live album.
There was one ill-fated attempt to record some of this during Mingus's lifetime, in New York City on September 12, 1963. The album "The Complete Town Hall Concert" includes the tracks "Epitaph Pt. I" and "Epitaph Pt. II", as well as "Clark in the Dark", for trumpeter Clark Terry, who played in the band.
"Oh, Lord, don't let 'em shoot us!
Oh, Lord, don't let 'em stab us!
Oh, Lord, don't let 'em tar and feather us!
Oh, Lord, no more swastikas!
Oh, Lord, no more Ku Klux Klan!
Name me someone who's ridiculous, Dannie.
Governor Faubus!
Why is he so sick and ridiculous?
He won't permit integrated schools.
Then he's a fool!
Boo nazi fascist supremacists!
Boo Ku Klux Klan with your evil plan!
Name me a handful that's ridiculous, Dannie Richmond.
Bilbo, Thomas, Faubus, Russel, Rockefeller, Byrd, Eisenhower
Why are they so sick and ridiculous?
Two, four, six, eight: they brainwash and teach you hate.
H-E-L-L-O-hello!" Charles Mingus - lyrics to "Original Faubus Fables"
Of all his compositions, Mingus returned to "Fables Of Faubus" most often. One of Mingus's most explicitly political works, the song was written as a direct protest against Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus, who in 1957 sent out the National Guard to prevent the racial integration of Little Rock Central High School by nine African American teenagers, in what became known as the Little Rock Crisis.
The song was first recorded for Mingus' 1959 album, "Mingus Ah Um." However, Columbia Records refused to allow the lyrics to the song to be included, and so the song was recorded as an instrumental on the album. It was not until October 20, 1960 that the song was recorded with lyrics, for the album "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus."
