Mingus Dynasty

Mingus Dynasty was the first band Sue Mingus organized after Charles Mingus’ death in 1979, collaborating with his own sidemen to honor his life and work. Although Mingus was a iconic and trailblazing bassist, he always said he was first and foremost a composer, and left behind over 300 compositions that deserved to be played, so a band carrying on his music became a natural, if unanticipated, mission.

Today, four decades later, the powerful legacy of Mingus Music ignites bandstands while new generations of musicians add their individual voices and continue to celebrate and explore this rich and varied musical legacy. With arrangements by Jack Walrath, Jimmy Knepper, and current Mingus Big Band members who use their decades of experience playing in Mingus repertory bands to collectively arrange on the bandstand and express their unique musical personalities, it’s an exciting and authentically Mingus experience.

The band will be celebrating the rerelease of Mingus’ Town Hall Concert 1964 on Candid Records, which sat unreleased for 40 years but is now available in partnership with Jazz Workshop.

Donald Edwards, drums

Donald Edwards has played across the globe with some of the finest musicians in jazz and other genres. He has now built a reputation all his own. He is a 2018 recipient of the Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works Grant, A Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Jazz Project. After winning the Louisiana Arts Ambassador’s Award in 1994 for Music Composition, Donald Edwards became one of the most sought after drummers on the Baton Rouge/ New Orleans music scene. He grew up playing different kinds of music ranging from marching band, hip-hop and pop to r&b, jazz, funk and gospel music. As a result, Edwards is now called on to play many different genres of music and meets them with creative interpretation and virtuosity. Donald Edwards is among the vanguard of players on the New York scene today. Edwards has 4 recordings as a leader and is also involved in the production of numerous recording projects.

Out of print for over 40 years and originally released on Mingus' own Jazz Workshop label, this legendary recording features a powerhouse sextet featuring Eric Dolphy, Johnny Coles, Jaki Byard, Clifford Jordan, and Dannie Richmond. In conjunction with Jazz Workshop Inc., the Charles Mingus Estate, the original material has now been carefully remastered by five-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Michael Graves, with vinyl mastering by Jeff Powell. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, it features the original artwork and liner notes, meticulously restored and reproduced.
